5 Questions To Ask Your Admitted Students

One of the big things I emphasize to admissions counselors is the importance of consistently asking their students direct questions. That concept is extremely important because if you’ve developed trust, asking the right kinds of questions will prompt students to provide you with context about their mindset and/or feelings on a variety of topics.
When it comes to your admitted (but undecided) student population, the worst thing you can do is sit back and assume this group has all the information they need and you can no longer influence their decision.
The more you know, the better you can serve up relevant information and stories to your students. Plus you’ll be able to draw out any concerns the student or family has about your school.
Here are five important questions I encourage you to ask your admits:
What do you see happening next for you in this whole process?
When you talk about college with your parents, what’s most important to them and what are they telling you at this point?
What do you think the hardest part will be when it comes to making your college decision?
Walk me through why coming to be a student here feels like it might be the right decision for you.
What is it about our school’s location that makes you feel it might be a good fit for college? (If you’re speaking with an out of state student or a student who lives 3+ hours away, tweak it a little and ask, What is it about our school that makes you feel like it might be worth going farther from home for college?
